General Information

The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) is a national conference designed to encourage students to pursue advanced training in the biomedical sciences or behavioral sciences, including mathematics and provide faculty mentors and advisors with resources for facilitating student success.

Formerly known as the MARC/MBRS Symposium, the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) is sponsored by The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), Division of Minority Opportunities in Research Program (MORE) and managed by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM).

During this four day conference, there are scientific sessions, professional development workshops, poster sessions, exhibits and many networking opportunities.

This conference provides opportunities for:

  • Students to share their research project data and demonstrate scientific knowledge
  • Students and faculty advisers to learn about high quality, significant scientific research in the biomedical sciences and to meet individuals who serve as role models and mentors
  • Students and faculty, as well as MORE program directors, to enhance their professional development as biomedical scientists, advisers, educators, and leaders
  • Students to learn about graduate programs and research fellowships in the biomedical sciences

The ABRCMS attracts students, faculty advisors and program directors from:

  • Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) funded institutions
  • Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS) funded institutions
  • Bridges to the Future Programs (BRIDGES) funded institutions
  • Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
  • Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs)
  • Tribal Colleges
  • Other minority serving institutions, both community colleges and undergraduate institutions
  • Other institutions not listed above

Exhibits

In 2005, there were over 300 exhibitors from graduate schools, professional societies, foundations, federal agencies and other institutions or organizations at the conference.

Being an exhibitor at the ABRCMS enables you to recruit students for your graduate programs, recruit students for your summer research programs, increase student membership and involvement in professional societies and demonstrate your continued commitment to the advancement of underrepresented minorities in the biomedical sciences.

Poster/Oral Presentations

Abstracts can be submitted in nine scientific disciplines and will be reviewed for acceptance to the conference as either a poster or oral presentation. The majority of accepted abstracts will be presented during seven poster sessions scheduled throughout the conference. All poster sessions will be located in the the same hall as the exhibits during exhibit hours. A small number of abstracts will be chosen to be presented in an oral presentation.

Awards

All undergraduate student presentations will be judged during the conference and those receiving the highest scores in each scientific discipline and in each educational level will be given an award during the final banquet.
